This lesson is set up for students to review multiplying by one digit: multiplying by tens and hundreds, estimating, expanded algorithm, and standard algorithm multiplication of 1-digit by 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers. Students may complete the activity on their own or in a small group. Students will “visit” four countries during the race: Brazil, France, Ireland, and Japan. In each country students will complete a series of math problems and a physical task. Once they complete the math problems and task students will check-in with the teacher to check for accuracy. If they are correct, they may move onto the next country. After all four countries are complete, students complete The Amazing Math Race by taking two (very careful) laps around the class room. This activity is set up to review the concepts, but to also get the kids moving. I hope your students enjoy it just as much as mine do!
