What type of multistep word problems can I expect to find in this packet?
- All multistep word problems in this lesson are grounded in the definition of each operation. Key words can only take you so far. Students cannot become master problem-sovlers if they don’t understand each operation at a fundamental level.
- The definitions of all four operations are listed at the top of the first few pages for students to constantly refer back to.
- There are two blank spaces for students to select the two operations they will use in each multistep word problem.
- Having them include the definition of the operation reinforces this concept.
- This process slows students down and encourages them to really think about the operation for each 2 step word problem before they jump to solve it!
What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?
- Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format. A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time. This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
