Musical Device Notes
Share

Description

This notes sheet includes definitions of eight musical devices that would benefit a poetry study for the AP Literature or 11th/12th grade English student. There is a space for students to record an example from a poem, which is set up for "Mad Girl's Love Song" by Sylvia Plath, but this field is editable. You can change the directions to a poem of your choice, or leave it open-ended so that students can find examples from any poem. Finally, there is a place for students to record notes on the relationship between each sound device and meaning in the poem.

In my class, I jigsaw this task by assigning each of my eight groups one of the terms, and then giving them time to find an example from the poem and brainstorm a connection between sound and meaning. Then, they present their ideas to the whole class while their peers fill out the notes.

Suggested responses for "Mad Girl's Love Song" are included. There are two versions (one intended for printed use, and one for digital).
