Description
Easy to teach, fun to learn! Students will rotate through 8 stations throughout the room. At each station, students will transcribe and translate DNA. Each station has a mutation that students will need to identify. After students have identified all 8 mutations, they will move onto part 2 where they look at the effects different muttions have on organims.
Topics Covered:
- Transcription and Translation of DNA
- Mutations (Nonsense, Missense, Insertion, Silent, Deletion)
Lesson Includes:
- Student Handout
- 8 Stations with DNA Mutations
- Part 2 PowerPoint for Descriptions of DNA Mutations
- Answer Key for 8 Stations
Directions:
Part 1
Step 1 - Rotate through 8 stations around the room. Each station has a set of DNA that you will transcribe and translate. (Use codon chart)
Step 2 - Determine what type of mutation occurred
Step 3 - Explain the result of that mutation on the protein that is made
Part 2
Step 4 - After steps 1-3 are completed, check your answers using the Part 2 PowerPoint and describe how this could affect a person with this mutation.
