Mutation Stations
Share

Description

Easy to teach, fun to learn! Students will rotate through 8 stations throughout the room. At each station, students will transcribe and translate DNA. Each station has a mutation that students will need to identify. After students have identified all 8 mutations, they will move onto part 2 where they look at the effects different muttions have on organims.

Topics Covered:

  • Transcription and Translation of DNA
  • Mutations (Nonsense, Missense, Insertion, Silent, Deletion)

Lesson Includes:

  • Student Handout
  • 8 Stations with DNA Mutations
  • Part 2 PowerPoint for Descriptions of DNA Mutations
  • Answer Key for 8 Stations

Directions:

Part 1

Step 1 - Rotate through 8 stations around the room. Each station has a set of DNA that you will transcribe and translate.  (Use codon chart)

Step 2 - Determine what type of mutation occurred

Step 3 - Explain the result of that mutation on the protein that is made

Part 2

Step 4 - After steps 1-3 are completed, check your answers using the Part 2 PowerPoint and describe how this could affect a person with this mutation.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSHS-LS1-1
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. Assessment does not include identification of specific cell or tissue types, whole body systems, specific protein structures and functions, or the biochemistry of protein synthesis.
NGSSHS-LS3-2
Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors. Emphasis is on using data to support arguments for the way variation occurs. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
