Description

This product includes the following:

Fill in the blank copy of Guided notes and its key. The notes can be easily printed for students or downloadable for any device.

This lesson is from my NC Math 3 Curriculum (in Unit # 4) but could be also used in Algebra 2.

This lesson includes the following concepts:

  • Defining reciprocal of number and reciprocal functions with evaulating various values into the function.
  • Drawing and defining various characteristics of the parent function of the reciprocal function such as asymptotes (vertical & horizontal), domain & range, and why there are asymptotes in its graph.
  • Defining the transformational form of the reciprocal function and its characteristics such as various transformations (up/down, left/right, and reflections), asymptotes, intercepts (x- and y-), and domain & range (in interval notation).
  • Graphing various types of reciprocal functions with various transformations and finding all basic information about the graph (asymptotes, intercepts, and domain/range).
  • Writing reciprocal functions when given its graph where must find the "a" value in the numerator in the transformational form.

This product will be downloaded as a ZIP file which includes:

  • Blank PDF copy which contains 2 pages
  • PDF copy of KEY with all blanks and examples filled in (including all detailed work).

The topic of reciprocal functions was never in my lesson plans after 5 years of teaching Math 3. I added this lesson in and I saw major improvement in student understanding about graphs of rational functions.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If 𝘧 is a function and 𝘹 is an element of its domain, then 𝘧(𝘹) denotes the output of 𝘧 corresponding to the input 𝘹. The graph of 𝘧 is the graph of the equation 𝘺 = 𝘧(𝘹).
Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context.
For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship.
