Description
The world of science is full of amazing historical events! What happened TODAY in science history? In each of these worksheets—print OR digital—students are presented with a memorable scientific event that happened on the specified date. The uniqueness of this activity is the incorporation of the NGSS Science & Engineering Practices. Students analyze a historical science event by:
TASK 1—Obtaining Information: A brief reading passage provides information about the historical science event, and an additional website link is given to research more if needed.
TASK 2—Asking Questions & Defining Problems: Students brainstorm 2-3 questions they have about the scientific phenomenon in this historical event.
TASK 3—Constructing Explanations: After reading the passage and exploring the link, students explain the cause of this scientific phenomenon in their own words.
TASK 4—Developing and Using Models: Students attempt to draw a visual model of this scientific phenomenon using symbols, shapes, arrows, and labels.
TASK 5—Analyzing Data and/or Mathematics: A graph or math question about this scientific event is provided, and students must interpret the data or use computational thinking to solve the problem.
TASK 6—Engaging in an Argument from Evidence: A prompt is given that relates to the historical science event or phenomenon. Students must use all of the information they learned in this activity to write a CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) response to this prompt.
Each activity can be completed on the worksheet provided, the Google Slide, or a separate sheet of paper. A teacher’s guide is also included with each product, which provides a variety of plausible responses, model examples, and correct answers. (This can be used as an answer key)
ALL October days are included in this bundle! Enjoy 31 products - one for each day of the month! PLUS receive a major discount when purchasing this bundle!
This resource can be completed on paper or online with laptops, Chromebooks, tablets, or any device that supports Google Slides. The downloadable file includes access to a link that will allow you to make your own copy of the resource for use in Google Classroom/Google Drive.
