About the Product
ThoughtFLOW Learning’s lesson, Understanding Figurative Language, contains instructional materials that foster an in-depth understanding of six common figurative language types: onomatopoeia, simile, hyperbole, metaphor, idiom, and personification. The instructional materials support students as they identify, understand, and apply figurative language.
Implementation in the Classroom
Understanding Figurative Language could be used as an introduction to figurative language or a refresher for upper elementary or middle school grade levels. There are digital and hardcopy versions of guided notes for students to use as they follow along. There are also hardcopy and digital versions of all worksheets. An answer key is included for teachers as well.

This is an 18-slide lesson that introduces students to onomatopoeia, simile, hyperbole, metaphor, idiom, and personification. Through visuals, guided notes, guided practice, and examples, this lesson contains various supports to cater to different teaching styles and students’ learning needs.
Figurative Language Worksheets (Hardcopy & Digital)
5 multi-level worksheets are included to reinforce the skills and concepts learned in the lesson. Not only do these worksheets target various learning levels and skills, but they're also perfect for group work and independent work! An answer key is provided for teachers to use.
