Description
Students use the "Behind the Name" website and the student-friendly handout to research the origin, meaning, and history of their first and middle names. This is a TERRIFIC first week of school activity-- students can make name tags that display the information learned through the webquest. Students can then share this information in a quick "introductory" speech.
The handout can also be used to research the meanings behind CHARACTER names in students favorite novels OR as inspiration for names students plan on including in original works of fiction. This is a handout and website I utilize often throughout a school year!!
The three-page handout is fully editable to meet your classroom needs.

Tied this to learning about the origins of English. This resource kept their research on track!
A lot of fun, but if you work in a divese school the names don't always come up.
This is an issue I deal with as well. In my classroom, all students are encouraged to ask family members the story behind his/her name (and those tend to be even more intriguing than what a website could teach). Perhaps someday, a new and improved Name Origin website will be created-- I am on the lookout and plan on updating the assignment when it happens. Thank you for the feedback and I am glad your students enjoyed the activity.
thank you
