How To Use

To prep these cards- print, laminate and cut.

Here are some ideas for how to use them!

  • place in a literacy center and have students pick a card
  • pick a student to draw a card for a whole group writing lesson
  • put in a class journal for students to write in when they are finished with their work

More about this resource!

Writing is a skill that takes practice. Lots of practice. There IS deep value in having students choose their own topic, however students also need to learn to write to a specific topic. These writing prompt cards are a great way for students to practice writing with choice and to a specific prompt.

These 78 writing prompts come as two different styles! Some of the prompts are outlined in black. These cards are great for narrative writing and require the students to use the actual words within their writing. Examples include "Thump-thump. Thump-thumb. I could hear my heart beating as I stared at the key in my hand." and "Although my fish looks normal, he's actually pretty special." Although they could appear anywhere in the story, they make GREAT story starters!

The other style is a generalized prompt and does not require students to use the exact wording as long as they stay on topic.

This resource was created for students in 1st or 2nd grade . It is a low-prep activity. To prep, print the prompts, laminate if desired and cut.

This resource was great for my higher kids to complete independently. It also has provided some whole group writing topics, when I couldn't come up with one.
