    Bundle Description
I created this unit because I couldn’t find any resources that combined reading and writing narratives. I used this unit for my creative writing elective, but it can be used for any ELA class. This unit is made up of six narrative writing mini-units (Setting, Mood & Imagery, Characterization, Plot & Conflict, Point of View & Tone, and Theme) that provide a leveled study of narrative reading and writing. Each mini-unit starts with understanding tasks and moves to analyzing and creating tasks. In addition, the units are ordered so that they move in order of difficulty starting with setting and moving to theme. The results for my creative writing students were fantastic! They truly grasped the essence of narrative writing in their final assessment using this leveled approach.

Grading: The activities that are part of this unit are meant to be formative (as-you-go and practice) assessments that lead to the summative (comprehensive and formal) assessment at the end. In the rubric file, you will find an editable rubric that you can use to grade students’ practice activities if you want to assign a score for these activities. I ask students to present and share their work, so this is an opportunity to provide a grade. You will also find an editable summative rubric for the final creative writing assignment.

Short Story Options: Each unit includes an optional reading component to help students understand the use of the narrative element in an exemplary piece. These readings specifically were included as exemplary examples of the narrative element; however, these mini-units were designed to give you options. Students can complete all parts together or you can choose which parts you would like them to complete. I wrote the directions so that the activities could be used in part or in whole.

Texts: Because some of the texts used in this unit are not part of the public domain, I cannot provide copies of them or link them in this teacher’s guide; however, they all can be found online, and I will give you directions for searching them in each mini-unit.

Creative Writing Examples: In the included answer key, you will find examples for each completed assignment. You can use these as a model before students begin the assignment to provide them with more structure and direction, or you can use it as your example to share after students have completed the assignment. Keep in mind, these examples are only meant as guides since there are many ways to complete the creative writing.

*This unit is compatible with Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive and includes directions for each. Directions are included for saving your digital document.*
