Learn about the Navajo Code Talkers and Native American heritage! Your students will crack codes, decipher hidden messages, and learn about the significance of Native American contributions to World War II. Students will have a blast deciphering hidden messages and learning about how the Navajo code changed the course of history!

This activity is perfect for Native American Heritage Month, or any time of the year! It is also a great way to highlight the contributions of Native Americans to the Allied war effort in World War II. Students will leave this activity with an appreciation for the service and sacrifice of Native Americans, and the important role secret codes played during World War II.

This activity includes:

• An introduction page.
• 3 background reading handouts introducing Native American contributions to World War II and the Navajo code.
• 5 Navajo code cipher handout that lets students translate secret Navajo codes and write using it.
• 5 activity worksheets that task students with answering questions about the reading passages and deciphering hidden messages using what they learned (with answer keys). Students will also write their own secret messages using the Navajo code.

All pages are ready to print, and are provided in both color and black and white versions.
