Description

Too many lectures and notes in your anatomy class? This nervous system activity is a great no-prep solution that allows students to make models of neuron structure including dendrites, axons, myelin sheath, and Nodes of Ranvier. Teacher directions, student worksheets, and doodle notes for background are all included.

Models are highly encouraged by NGSS due to the greater student comprehension and retention of material. This activity links structures and functions while maintaining student interest through hands-on instruction and modeling.

*PLEASE NOTE: This resource is also included in my Nervous System and Full Anatomy Curriculum.

Terms addressed: neuron, cell body, axon, Nodes of Ranvier, Schwann cell,

myelin sheath, dendrites, nerve impulse

Included in this resource:

  • 1 page of teacher directions w/ possible adaptations for advanced students
  • 1 example photo of a student model
  • 1 student worksheet page (printable and digital versions included)
  • 1 page of Neuron Structure doodle notes w/ answer key (printable and digital versions included)

This activity addresses NGSS HS-LS1-2.

This is a great modeling project that would be suited for both the introduction and review of the basic structure of a neuron. By providing many building material choices, this model can be made as complex or simple as desired.

This was perfect to help me create an assignment for my Med Term students to build a neuron. I didn't have to do a lot of leg work. This is well worth it!

NGSSHS-LS1-2
Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms. Emphasis is on functions at the organism system level such as nutrient uptake, water delivery, and organism movement in response to neural stimuli. An example of an interacting system could be an artery depending on the proper function of elastic tissue and smooth muscle to regulate and deliver the proper amount of blood within the circulatory system. Assessment does not include interactions and functions at the molecular or chemical reaction level.
