Description
New Year 7th Grade Math Review + Goal Setting.
Also included in this Bundle of Christmas/Holiday-Themed Math Activities.
In this activity, students will solve 6 word problems and, based on the correct answer, set a goal for the new year. The word problems are intended to be real-life applicable to engage students. (Word Problems include: proportions about a trail mix Rachael Ray is making, a unit rate problem about Usain Bolt, a proportional relationship problem about Howard Berg (the World's fastest reader), finding the area of a Crumbl cookie to determine the amount of frosting needed, finding the percent of a discount of UGG slippers, and finding the distance between where Dory and Nemo are swimming).
Each question has 2 answer choices; the incorrect answer is the common incorrect work/answer.
Skills include:
#1 - proportions (specifically which proportion is set up correctly to solve the problem)
#2 - unit rates
#3 - proportional relationship equation (specifically paying attention to using the variables correctly)
#4 - area of a circle (given the diameter)
#5 - percent of change (finding the percent of the discount)
#6 - rational number arithmetic (distance between two negative values)
After getting the correct answers, students will set goals for the following categories:
#1 - Personal Interest Goal
#2 - Academic Goal
#3 - Health Goal
#4 - Lifestyle Goal
#5 - Math Goal
#6 - Any/Other Goal
This review aligns well with the Illustrative Math Curriculum:
#1 - Units 1-2 (Scale Drawings/Proportional Reasoning)
#2 - Units 2/4 (Proportional Relationships/Unit Rates)
#3 - Unit 2 (Proportional Relationships)
#4 - Unit 3 (Measuring Circles)
#5 - Unit 4 (Percents & Proportional Relationships)
#6 - Unit 5 (Rational Number Arithmetic)
