Description

New Year's Math Goofy Glyph for 1st grade is an activity students can use to hone their abilities in mathematics while putting together a fun art project that you can showcase on your classroom wall. Whether your students answer the questions right or wrong will dictate the way their glyphs look in this potentially silly activity. They will end up with a New Year's baby girl, boy, or a prehistoric baby! The math problems are designed for children in the 1st grade and are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for first grade mathematics. This is a great way to ring in the new year!

Math skills covered:

  • addition and subtraction within 20

At the back of this booklet are templates that your students can use to help design their glyphs; otherwise, they can choose to create their own artwork.

Also at the back of this book is a graph that you can use to demonstrate how the students in your class answered different questions from the glyph.

This is a very detailed glyph. Make sure to check out the preview to see if it is good match for your class.

All artwork is original and created by myself.

One of the cutest and funniest glyphs my students have done to date! I've never heard them laugh so hard while do a math project like this. Definitely the most engaging "data collection" activities I've done with my students.

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
