Description

This annotation assignment would be appropriate for any level of class studying Night by Elie Wiesel as it can be easily modified to increase or decrease rigor.

Students are required to highlight and make annotations in their novels based on specific guidelines. This assignment allows students the opportunity to practice critical thinking skills as they read closely for rhetorical devices (themes, symbolism, character development, syntax, figurative language, etc.) rather than just reading for plot.

Included in the instructions are alternatives for students who have school-issued novels or have difficulty writing in the margins of novels. I've also included a rubric for ease of grading.

These annotation guides make my life so much easier! I always struggle with what all they could be looking for in a novel, and these help so much! I didn't go to school to be a teacher, so in situations like this I feel like I'm not very prepared. Thank you do much for creating these for people like me!

In the introduction to the teachers regarding grading purposes, it is stated that "I've included my student-led handout here." However, there is no link to a handout. This would have proved very useful in setting up the discussions and seeing how they followed the annotation guide.

This is a great resource for ideas to use with the novel. Because my students use school-issued novels, I still had to spend quite a bit of time creating my own tool for my students. For the price, this resource is very helpful.
