When using both resources together student growth and success increases dramatically!

Introduce a new weekly skill by presenting the PowerPoint slide, hang the reference poster, and distribute the corresponding bookmark for student resource when practicing the new skill.
Students will create learning goals and action steps for the skill/ strategy and keep track of their practice while they monitor their learning on a reading log that prompts for evidence.
Once the assessment is given, the bookmark becomes a trophy on the collection page and learners cite their growth in the data section.

Below you will find the descriptions for both products individually!

DESCRIPTION FOR: Data Program 9 Non Fiction Reading Skill Strategy Bookmarks and Reading Log

Perfect for all SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, and MATH teachers that are promoting non-fiction reading in their classrooms!

(If you are an English or Reading teacher, please see my complete set of Fiction and Non-Fiction Data Program with 30 Bookmarks.)

Research shows that students who self-reflect, monitor, and track their own data outperform those who do not. This program allows students to do just that! For each week a new reading comprehension skill or strategy is taught, a new supporting bookmark will be given to the students as a resource. They will use the bookmark to remind them why great readers need to know the skill, along with reminders and prompts to help them when reading and practicing the new skill.

Once the week or unit is over and an assessment is given, the students will then use a collection page to turn the bookmark into a “trophy” by gluing it onto one of the chosen “My Data” pages. When doing this, the kids start to get excited about growing their collection of bookmarks. The students will be able to flip back to each bookmark to review the skill/ strategy and to use as a resource throughout the year. The collection page is also where student data is recorded.

The data prompts ask about:
pre and post test scores, student goal, action steps to reach the goal, evidence of mastering the skill, any intervention needed, and how they are now a smarter student for learning this material.

This data will allow reflection of their efforts and a chance to set goals for improvement, and record their growth. These data pages can also be a great student-led parent teacher conference idea.

There are a total of 9 bookmarks to help your student think deeply about what they are reading and how they are reading.

Included skills/ strategies are:
• Activating Prior Knowledge
• Genre: Non-Fiction
• Problem and Solution
• Order and Sequence
• Cause and Effect
• Description
• Compare and Contrast
• Text Features
• Fact and Opinion

I like choices, so I have created multiple “My Data” sheets to choose from. You can either let students have a choice. Or you can choose your favorite style depending on the grade level or needs of your students. Furthermore, each design has the text prompting the students about their goals and growth. If you find this area is too small for your students to write in, there are data pages solely designed for the adherence of bookmarks, with a separate page with a bigger space to write in student data. This can be copied front to back or on to two separate pages to lie side by side in a data binder.

Also included is a reading log for home or school reading. When the student reads and is working on the bookmark skill/ strategy of the week they will record the information on their reading log. They have to state what skill they are practicing, in what book, and evidence of this skill. The log will also let student's decide how well they are learning the skill/ strategy by rating it a 4,3,2, or 1.

The numbers represent the following:
1. I don’t really understand it yet.
2. I’m starting to get it, but I still need someone to help me.
3. I can mostly figure it out by myself, but I sometimes get stuck.
4. I understand and I could teach it to someone else.
