The Nonfiction Paragraph Writing: Problem and Solution lesson teaches students a simple three-step process for writing a short informational or explanatory text using the nonfiction text structure: problem and solution. Students generate ideas, fill out a graphic organizer, and use a paragraph frame to compose a problem and solution paragraph.

HOW IT WORKS
• The lesson begins with a review of the nonfiction text structure: problem and solution found in informational and explanatory texts.
• Next, through teacher modeling, students learn to brainstorm and select an idea, use a graphic organizer, and fill in a paragraph frame (or use a menu of signal words and phrases) to write a nonfiction text using the problem and solution text structure.
• Finally, students apply their learning as they complete the Nonfiction Paragraph Writing: Description worksheet and the graphic organizer of their choice to compose their own problem and solution paragraph.
