Learning how to take notes effectively is a lifelong skill and is arguably one of the most challenging components of the research process. It’s crucial that we explicitly teach students how to take notes and paraphrase, while also providing numerous opportunities for students to practice these skills prior to engaging in a research project.

I created this resource to include everything you need to effectively teach and practice note taking and paraphrasing with your students. A key focus within each activity is 'reading purpose', which is especially important during research-based tasks. Each activity and reading task card is accompanied by a 'research question' so that students are actively practicing locating information that connects with specific questions, just as they would when conducing their own research.
