Scaffolded activities and differentiated reading task cards to teach note taking and paraphrasing skills! Posters, scaffolded activities, bookmarks and differentiated reading task cards - this resource includes everything you need to teach and practice note taking and paraphrasing within your classroom.
Note taking and paraphrasing are essential skills for students to master in order to become effective researchers, confident communicators and proficient writers.
I created this resource to include everything you need to effectively teach and practice note taking and paraphrasing with your students. A key focus within each activity is 'reading purpose', which is especially important during research based tasks. Each activity and reading task card is accompanied by a 'research question' so that students are actively practicing locating information that connects with specific questions, just as they would when conducing their own research.
This resource is separated into the following sections:
Teaching the Skills: Note taking fact sheet with examples; Sample text with practice activity; Plagiarism and Paraphrasing information sheet with example; Paraphrasing speaking activity; Paraphrasing writing activity
Pushing our Thinking to Understand a Text: How to use questions, ideas and conclusions to actively engage with a text; Sentence prompts; Sample note taking using 'push your thinking' prompts; Note taking and paraphrasing practice activity
Posters and Printables for your Students: Classroom posters; 'Pencil' bookmarks with tips for note taking, paraphrasing and 'pushing your thinking'; Template note taking, paraphrasing and reflection cards
Differentiated Reading Task Cards: Reading task cards differentiated into three levels - each task card includes a short passage on a topic of interest and has a specific 'key question' for students to focus on when practicing note taking and paraphrasing
