What type of problems can I expect to find in these 5th grade multiplying decimals worksheets?

  • This lesson includes computational problems with multiplying decimals by decimals and also multiplying decimal word problems.
  • In each problem, students are asked to estimate the product by rounding both numbers in the multiplication problem. (for example 0.95 x 3.7 = 1 x 4, my estimate is 4)
  • Next, students calculate the exact product by first counting the number of decimal places in the problem. (The product of 0.95 and 3.7 will have 3 decimal places).
  • Then students multiply as if each number is a whole number.  (If I’m multiplying 0.95 x 3.7, I would note that my product will have 3 decimal places.  Then I would multiply 95 x 37 = 3515.)
  • Then they place the decimal point in the product to get my exact answer (3515 with 3 decimal places becomes 3.515).
  • Finally, they check the estimate to see if their answer is reasonable(3.515 is close to 4).
  • The numbers in these multiplying decimals by decimals problems go through the hundredths place (per the fifth grade standard).
  • The size of the numbers does not exceed 3 by 2 digit multiplication or 4 by 1 digit multiplication.

What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?

  • Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format.  A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time.  This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
  • Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty.  We meet students where they are, regardless of level.  As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder.  Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
  • Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!

In addition to the deliberate scaffolding, these 5th grade multiplying decimals worksheets also include an instructional guide jam-packed with teaching hacks and best practices.  There is also a “Misconceptions” section that allows you to be one step ahead of mistakes students are most likely to make.

These multiplying decimal word problems common core aligned to 5th grade standard 5.NBT.7 (decimal operations- multiplying decimals by decimals).
