A Pattern Talk is a daily math talk classroom routine. Students use fact families for one-digit addition and subtraction to find the missing value (missing addends and missing totals) in each number bond. Perfect for morning meeting, calendar time, or math warm-ups. Use as a pre-teaching or review activity! Includes digital Google Slides and cards printables.

Product Description:

You will receive a PDF with instructions for use, a link to copy the Pattern Talk to your Google Slides account, and 14 pages of printable cards. Cards are half-sheet sized, perfect for displaying in a number corner or under the whiteboard.

The Pattern Talk is comprised of 29 pages of animated slides, intended to cover 14 days of instruction. Slides are intended to be projected on the board and discussed as a whole class. Each day, students are asked to follow the 3-step Pattern Talk process:

  1. Predict the next card in the sequence
  2. Add or subtract to find the missing piece of the number bond
  3. Analyze the cards and discuss patterns you notice

Why Use Pattern Talks?

Number bonds are excellent models for supporting students' understanding of the relationship between addition and subtraction, particularly in modeling word problems and multi-step problems. This Pattern Talk helps familiarize students with useful number bond models. While working to uncover the missing part of each number bond (both addends and sums), students will build an understanding of the relationship between addition and subtraction. Matching equations underneath each card in both addition and subtraction help to support this understanding, and provide opportunity for class discussion. Included in the talk is a how to use page with suggestions for further visual and hands-on class manipulatives that can support students throughout this talk.
