Help your students strengthen their understanding of numbers and mathematical relationships with this number line activity! Number lines are an essential tool for developing number sense, supporting students as they visualize numerical relationships and build a deeper understanding of key math concepts.

This resource is designed to support learners as they explore whole numbers within 100, helping them build a strong foundation for more advanced math and problem-solving skills. Whether used for whole group practice or targeted intervention, this activity makes number lines meaningful and fun!

Activity Overview

Number Line Sleuths was made to help students build number sense, estimation skills, and a deep understanding of number lines in a fun and interactive way.

Each challenge presents students with three number lines, each showing a dot with an arrow pointing to it. The number lines vary in range, complexity, and scale, and not every tick mark is labeled. This encourages students to analyze spacing, identify patterns, and reason mathematically to determine the mystery number.

Students take on the role of a Number Line Sleuth as they examine each number line carefully, use clues from the tick marks and labeled values, and make an educated guess about what number the dot represents. They are encouraged to justify their thinking using mathematical language and reasoning. This activity promotes rich math talk, strengthens critical thinking skills, and helps students build confidence when working with open number lines and varying intervals.

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Mathematically proficient students start by explaining to themselves the meaning of a problem and looking for entry points to its solution. They analyze givens, constraints, relationships, and goals. They make conjectures about the form and meaning of the solution and plan a solution pathway rather than simply jumping into a solution attempt.
