Number Patterns Word Problems

4 Corners Game

Solving word problems that include number patterns can be challenging.

Get your students up and moving around with this game designed to add spiral review, practice, or remediation to your Math resources!

This classroom and tutor-tested product file includes:

* a pdf 4 Corners game file for you to download and display on your Smartboard

The pdf Number Patterns Word Problems 4 Corners Game product file includes 8 question slides. Each question slide is followed by an answer slide.

* a Number Patterns Word Problems 4 Corners Game Recording Sheet to print for each student to use, giving additional student accountability

* The Recording Sheet included in this product file is 2 pages.

* I copied this double-sided to have a single sheet for each student.

* I modeled what “showing work” could look like.

Using a 1-2 minute wait time per question, gives a bit more accountability as well;

students had to work through each question rather than going and standing by an alphabet letter with a friend or early finisher.

This was a great review activity. I loved the format and look forward to trying this type of activity again. The only thing i would have wanted was a subtraction and division problem.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations. For example, observe that 4 times a number is always even, and explain why 4 times a number can be decomposed into two equal addends.
Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 0, and given the rule “Add 6” and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences, and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the corresponding terms in the other sequence. Explain informally why this is so.
