Description

This is a number sense assessment for grades K-2. It assesses a student's ability to recognize and generate numbers using multiple representations such as tally marks, numerals, number words, and dots. It also assesses a student's ability to understand the words before, after, and between, through a listening portion for younger students. When printed front-back, this file produces two versions of the same test. The first version is pretty basic, the second is more challenging. You could even use version one as homework or classwork and then assess using version two. I gave version one to all my first graders, then gave version two as extra practice to the ones who did not do well. It is important for students to have solid number sense before moving on to operations. The thumbnails do not display the correct formatting so please do not be turned off by this. The document can be edited if you want to change out the numbers.

Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
