Number Sense Math Cereal Box Project Activity Worksheets

Do your students like pets? Why not have them choose a pet number, use their number sense to enhance their math skills, and share it using a hands on model.

This cereal box interactive project allows students to analyze a three or four digit number in a variety of ways. It touches many common core standards across grade levels. Students increase their number sense by completing each part of the project. In completing their pet number cereal box students will:

•Write forms of their pet number (standard, word, expanded, Roman numerals).

•Create a base ten block model.

•Fill in a place value chart.

•Create a word problem using their pet number.

•Solve problems with the pet number ( +, -, x, ÷ ).

•Create fractions using the digits in their pet number.

•Round their number to the nearest ten and hundred.

•Create a number line model.

•Determine if their pet number is even or odd.

•Learn by doubling, tripling and halving their pet number.

•Use their pet number as a money amount.

•Write cool facts about their pet number (research).

Once students finish investigating their pet number, they cut out each section and glue them on their cereal box. They can decorate their box and share it with the whole class or in small groups. I wrap my students cereal boxes with paper from the dollar store.

In order to complete the “cool facts” about their number, students can visit numberempire.com or “Google” their number to see different ways it is used. Wikipedia has facts about every year from 1AD to 2016. If your students want a challenge, have them check out www2.stetson.edu.

There is no prep needed for this unit. Just ask your students to save cereal boxes. This packet includes each of the forms your students will need to create their pet number cereal box. See my preview for details. I hope your students have fun as they expand their understanding of numbers.
