Description

Number Talks are the perfect addition to your Grade 1 math period. Increase students’ number reasoning and mental math skills with activities designed for the 2020 Ontario Math Curriculum. Number Talks will increase their number sense, mathematical reasoning, and computational abilities every day!

All you need to do is project the slides onto a projecting screen, whiteboard or interactive whiteboard. This resource also works perfectly for remote learning environments like Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Team as well. (Parts of the slides are made as interactive slides, so you can use movable pieces and type in answers as you are leading your Number Talks lesson.)

All of the slides are ready to go. You just need to navigate through the slides in order to make your session engaging and meaningful. Prompts are included for students to foster meaningful and powerful conversations throughout the Number Talks session each day.

I have been implementing Number Talks in my classroom for the past several years. I see the great value in Number Talks, and have seen great progress and skill development in every student in my class. It is definitely a part of my daily routine, and students are highly engaged and enjoy our daily lesson. What I found frustrating was that I needed to look for various resources to find Number Talks problems for each day. It was a struggle for me not to have a single comprehensive resource that takes care of a whole year of Number Talk sessions which aligned with the Ontario math curriculum.

By having this resource in your hand, you no need to face the frustration of trying to find material each day; this is a single, comprehensive Number Talks resource for the entire year of Ontario Math Curriculum. This resource saves time and eliminates the guesswork.

Each Month’s Pack includes:

  • 20 Engaging and Meaningful Number Talks problem slide decks (in PDF and PowerPoint) that are easy to navigate and contain a lot of visual aids to make it super easy to lead a lesson and also make it easy and engaging for your students to learn the content.
  • A Number Talks Guide for each day’s lesson highlighting key learning, showing what is included in a slide deck for the day and instruction/suggestions to how to lead each day’s lesson, so there is no guesswork whatsoever.
  • A Read This First Teacher’s Guide that shows you how to use this resource with your students and enhance your daily Number Talks experience more effective and meaningful.

Length of Number Talks

Each day’s lesson runs 10-15 minutes. Conversations and discussions during Number Talks are essential. Once you and your students get the routine down, you can definitely have a meaningful Number Talks session within 10-15 minutes each day using these curated lessons and slides.

Progression of the Problems

The problems gradually increase in difficulty as the year progresses. It’s best to follow the Number Talks in order, but you can skip or come back to them as you see fit.

This resource does not only include activities which simply or only focus on building counting skills and addition and subtraction skills, but covers more comprehensive mathematical ideas and concepts involving numbers while respecting the 2020 Ontario Grade 1 Curriculum expectations.

For Split/Combined Grade Classrooms

I understand the challenge of teaching split/combined grade classes, as I have been a split/combined grade teacher myself a number of times as well. I would recommend you purchasing the lower grade pack/bundle, so you can have one Number Talks lesson than carrying two separate ones for each grade. (e.g., If you are teaching a Grade 1/2 class, I would recommend you purchasing the Grade 1 Pack rather than Grade 2 pack.)

The skillsets covered in this resource are relevant for both grades and still build strong numeracy, number sense and mental math skills along with mathematical reasoning and computational abilities. Your older grade students may find the first number of days’ contents easier for sure, but strategies and skillsets they both need to gain are the same, and this resource covers them in a more comprehensive and holistic manner.

This resource is perfect for:

  • Grade 1 teachers who would like to implement daily, meaningful, effective Number Talks lessons.
  • Teachers who have been struggling to find a single comprehensive Number Talks resource aligned with the 2020 Ontario Grade 1 Math Curriculum.
  • Teachers who want to build their students’ strong numeracy, number sense, and mental math skills, along with mathematical reasoning and computational abilities.
  • Supply Teachers
  • Special Education Resource Teachers (SERT)
  • Whole class instruction and small group instruction

I hope you enjoy this resource as much as my students and I do daily.
