Description

This 26 slide PowerPoint presentation (.pdf format), serves as the introduction to the multiple settings found in Lois Lowry’s novel, Number the Stars. Through a teacher led discussion, our class views the presentation before we begin reading, to assist with understanding the history, geography, and motivation of the story characters. It also, of course, assists students with visualizing as they read. We often revisit individual slides of the presentation during our reading, to assist with understanding and visualization.

The last slide is labeled as an “interesting fact,” and includes a photograph of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid” statue found in Langelinie Harbor, in Copenhagen. Even though the statue is only briefly mentioned in the novel (Chapter 2), with the popularity of Disney’s “Little Mermaid,” students really do enjoy connecting with the setting through this very familiar fairy tale.

Slides include photographs, illustrations and/or depictions the following:

• World map

• Map of Germany/Denmark/Sweden

• WWII timeline

• City of Copenhagen

• Danish harbor

• Tivoli Gardens

• Amalienborg Palace

• King Christian X

• Steam engine train (1940s wartime transportation)

• Uncle Henrik’s seaside house

• Footpath through woods (daytime scenes / nighttime scenes)

• Uncle Henrik’s boat

• “The Little Mermaid” statue, Copenhagen

PLEASE NOTE: Several of the photographs included in this product are also included in our PowerPoint of Symbolism and Related Terms.

I really liked this powerpoint for a pre-reading activity! It helped the students understand some of the content that we would be learning about before the book was opened. It also gave them great visuals to refer back to when reading the book.
