Description

Cut out these task cards and have student take time comprehending what operation (operations) he or she will use to solve the problem. Working on a follow-up with blanks to fill-in numbers, as well as cards with actual numbers in them. This is just a start for the thinking process. I'd like to know how well it works with kids' comprehension before I move on. Would LOVE feedback!

I used numberless word problems for the first time with a young student I was tutoring. Numberless word problems lend themselves to children thinking about the problem, making pictures in their minds or on paper, and inhibiting them from rushing to use the numbers in a problem. This set is advertised as 3rd-6th grade. Many were way too difficult for my third grader. He did help me to choose ones he felt confident trying!

I used the format with word problems that we were using in class. I wanted my student to see the problem without the number just so they could comprehend what the problem was about.

I found the resource very useful for all of my students. I was able to use some items in centers & others for a small group instructional practice. Although teacher direct instruction wasn't necessary for the activities, I found that it helped when I was working with my struggling students. They were engaged in the activities.

This was a great way to introduce numberless word problems. It helped the students focus on the words, rather than the numbers.
