Description
Numberless Word Problems- Set 3- Wood Word Problem Practice, Building Problem Solving Skills, Developing Mathematical Reasoning
Recess Themed.
Word Problems tend to be student's and teacher's worst nightmare. My students used to read the problem, pull out the numbers, and then just randomly start operating. Very little thought went into what visualizing the problem and figuring out the operation. They were just looking for clue words, or guessing! Using numberless word problems helps students learn to look at the information, analyze the word problem information, and make a rational decision to identify the operation. It also helps them notice the importance of the question and wording. I use this to build conceptual understanding in math, and increase accuracy in solving word problems and identifying the operation.
How do Numberless Word Problems Work?
Students are presented with a word problem without a question or numbers. Students then work together to "Notice" information that is included, or not included in the problem. They then "Wonder" about the problem.. What's happening? What's missing. They work together to add numbers in appropriate places, and then generate questions that can be solved using the information in the problem.
