Description
Orthographic mapping is VITAL to help students become successful readers! The games and strategies included in this pack will help students map words. This pack specifically focuses on looking at the rhyming chunks of words—rime units.
What is a rime unit? The string of letters that follow the onset (e.g. the /at/ in cat). The onset is the initial phonological unit of any word (e.g. /c/ in cat).
What rime units are used? Why those? The rime units used in this orthographic mapping pack are the most common two letter short vowel rimes.
How do rime units help students map?
Our brains love patterns! In Equipped for Reading Success, Dr. David Kilpatrick explains words are stored in our brains by first sounds (onset) and rhyming patterns (rime units). When we use draw students attention to rimes in words we capitalize on one form of how our words are stored in our brains: rhyming pattern (rimes). This sets the stage for being able to effortlessly and efficiently decode single syllable words.
