Teaching students the open number line concept can be challenging, yet helping them understand the idea of benchmark numbers (10's, 100's, etc) is a great starting point. I've taught my students that our benchmark numbers are the rest stops they need to make along the journey to the final destination. This journey of jumps will increase accuracy and a full understanding of the open number line process for solving both addition and subtraction problems.
