Operations with Rational Expressions Stacks Review Activity
Share

Description

A great way for students to practice all operations with rational expressions and self-monitor their progress! This Stacks review game includes 20 problems on simplifying, multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting with like and unlike denominators. The problems complete a circuit; wherever students decide to start, the sequence of answers/problems will get them back to where they started at the end!

Includes:

  • Directions on how to print and distribute cards to groups
  • Guided template to keep track of work
  • 20 problems involving rational expressions [4 of each: simplify, multiply, divide, add and subtract with like and unlike denominators]
  • Detailed answer key with step by step how to solve each problem

How to do the stacks review activity in class:

Students will lay out all 20 cards with the answer side face up. They will choose a card to flip over to reveal the first problem. Once solved, they will locate the answer card and flip it over to find their next problem. They will stack this problem on the previous and keep working until they finish all cards. The last card answer should be on the bottom of the pile.

Rewrite simple rational expressions in different forms; write 𝘢(𝘹)/𝘣(𝘹) in the form 𝘲(𝘹) + 𝘳(𝘹)/𝘣(𝘹), where 𝘢(𝘹), 𝘣(𝘹), 𝘲(𝘹), and 𝘳(𝘹) are polynomials with the degree of 𝘳(𝘹) less than the degree of 𝘣(𝘹), using inspection, long division, or, for the more complicated examples, a computer algebra system.
Understand that rational expressions form a system analogous to the rational numbers, closed under addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by a nonzero rational expression; add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions.
