Description
Students will practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing both positive and negative decimals in the context of real scenario involving income and expenses. In this discovery worksheet, students keep track of the income and expenses of a boy mowing lawns to earn money during the summer months. They practice with their integer operations while touching on topics such as debt, initial investments, and simple interest. All debits and credits are organized by students in a table. There are summary questions included at the end of the activity that focus on some of the big ideas of the actual operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals. Students are also provided with a workspace to organize their thinking and a checklist to ensure they stay on track with the tasks being asked. A follow-up extension activity is included for high flyers ready for a challenge involving hourly rates, commission, and a two-step equation.
