Description
Ordering numbers, such as organizing in ascending and descending order and identifying more than or less than, is an essential functional math skill within the vocational, workplace, and daily living environments.
From organizing different quantities of items on a shelf to knowing how many to buy next time based on how many you used last time (more than less than), these are skills people use daily.
This 6-day lesson unit addresses the functional math skill of ordering numbers from least to greatest and vice versa (ascending and descending order), identifying more than less than from prior experiences to future experiences, and converting common abbreviations in measurement.
Students will increase their familiarity and understanding of ordering numbers, including quantities or sizes of items at a grocery store, as well as using recall to determine a future need, including whether to bring more or less than last time based on a prior experience (example- should I bring 1 snack or 2 snacks to eat during my work break because I only brought 1 last time and was still hungry?).
These lesson plans and ordering number worksheet/activities are designed to help them understand number sense so they can apply these concepts confidently.
Through practical application, students will:
- Order Numbers: List number values in ascending and descending order, including estimated drive times when searching for directions and bus trackers anticipating when a bus will arrive at a certain bus stop
- Convert Common Abbreviations of Measurement: Beyond just TSP = teaspoon, abbreviations include CT (count), QTY (quantity), MI (miles), PKG (package), and more!
- Identify Need for More Than or Less Than: When to adjust an amount based on previous need, including bringing more money to afford all the food one wants to order to feel full, or that a 10 ride pass was mostly unused before it expired so to only buy a 5 ride pass next time.
By the end of this unit, students will strengthen their awareness of number values and abbreviations of common forms of measurement and use prior experience to determine the need for more or less through situational worksheets, practice, activities, and assessment to increase their confidence in the skill of number sense.
Created with teens and young adults in mind, students will see themselves through the questions and examples in these lesson plans.
