Description
The following 3 rhetorical analysis prompts for Outcasts United are modeled after the AP Language and Composition rhetorical analysis prompts. One of the prompts is from the introduction and mirrors the Clare Boothe Luce 2017 rhetorical analysis question. Each prompt gives context and a specific passage from the book, as well as a rhetorical analysis question, asking students to analyze St. John's rhetorical choices.
Outcasts United is our 2017 summer read. However, even if a student hasn't read the book, they can still respond.
While they are modeled after the AP exam, the difficulty of the questions are appropriate for any advanced high schooler (9-12).
An instructor could use the prompt(s) as bell work, a close reading activity, and/or a writing assessment based on the ability of his/her students.

I used this resource as part of my unit, and it was very successful. I worked with reluctant readers and this resource helped me build an accessible unit with targeted questions and activities to pull reluctant readers into the text.
These Outcasts United Rhetorical Analysis Writing Prompts were a great resource to use with my AIG students.
I look forward to using these next year. I wish I had them last August.
Goes so well with the theme after reading the novel.
