POSITIONAL WORDS - Write the Room and ABC Order
Write the Room is ideal for use at a literacy center, during small group time, or as an independent work activity. These activities reinforce the understanding of prepositions / positional words as well as reading skills and writing skills. They are also a fun way for ESL / ELD students to learn about positional words!
Write the Room is an interactive literacy activity in which children move around the room looking for the picture/word cards. They read the words on the cards and then write them in the corresponding spot on their recording sheet.
Included in this packet:
★Two different sets of Write the Room preposition cards. Each set includes ten picture/word cards, for a total of 20 positional words.
Set 1 includes these prepositions: up, down, on, off, behind, in front, below, above, in, out
Set 2 includes these positional words: first, last, away, toward, through, around, right, left, over, under
★3 differentiated recording sheets for each set to meet the needs of your students:
1. “Write the Room” for recording the positional words. (3 different versions: a recording sheet with primary guide lines is included, one with the preposition guide words for students to trace, and a sheet without guide lines.)
2. ”Sentence Writing” — students choose one of the prepositions, use it in a sentence, and illustrate the sentence.
3. “ABC Order” — children write the prepositions in alphabetical order after recording them. A recording sheet with traceable words is included for students needing assistance with this, as well as a sheet with lines only and another with primary guide lines.
★Alphabet sheet (color and b/w copies) An alphabet sheet is included as well, to assist your students with the ABC ordering activity and with correct letter formation.
★Answer keys for easy correcting and/or for students to self-check their work.
There are two picture/word cards on each 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper. When printed, each card will measure 5.25” x 8”.
Simply print the color cards, mount them on construction paper and laminate for durability if desired, and this activity is ready to go!
