Description

I use this crossword puzzle during our 6th-grade weather unit when we are learning about the weather instruments. This activity includes:

  • ONE standards-based informational text about weather instruments
  • ONE fun crossword puzzle that accompanies the text
  • ONE answer key for easy teacher use
  • ONE link to matching Quizlet flashcards for extra vocab practice

Key Vocabulary

  • meteorologist
  • forecast
  • prediction
  • thermometer
  • temperature
  • heat
  • air mass
  • hygrometer
  • sling psychrometer
  • barometer
  • air pressure
  • high air pressure
  • low air pressure
  • wind vane
  • weather vane
  • anemometer
  • radar
  • satellite imagery
  • hurricanes

All you have to do is print, and the students can complete this on their own! I am a sixth-grade science teacher in South Carolina, and our students do not have access to science textbooks. I use these readings and crossword puzzles like a textbook for my students. I have students glue their graded work into their interactive notebooks... and then have the information to read and study!

My favorite way to use this puzzle is to include it with a KWL. I start class by having students create a KWL and add a few things they KNOW and WANT TO KNOW about weather tools. Then we complete the puzzle and reading. After the puzzle is complete, students add something that they learned to the LEARNED section of the KWL. This generally takes a full 55-minute class when combined with a warm-up! Other ideas - This could be the EXPLAIN or ELABORATE in a 5E inquiry learning cycle, a text used in a PBL activity, or as a science station! Also great for a substitute, emergency-plan, early-finishers, remediation, or homework!

When students finish the crossword, they could use these flashcards for extra vocabulary practice: https://quizlet.com/subject/weather-tools/

Great activity to have students work on after the previous unit test to start preparing them for weather. Easy to grade, love that it had a reading to go along with it so it can totally stand alone.

NGSSMS-ESS2-5
Collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses result in changes in weather conditions. Emphasis is on how air masses flow from regions of high pressure to low pressure, causing weather (defined by temperature, pressure, humidity, precipitation, and wind) at a fixed location to change over time, and how sudden changes in weather can result when different air masses collide. Emphasis is on how weather can be predicted within probabilistic ranges. Examples of data can be provided to students (such as weather maps, diagrams, and visualizations) or obtained through laboratory experiments (such as with condensation). Assessment does not include recalling the names of cloud types or weather symbols used on weather maps or the reported diagrams from weather stations.
