Description
Conduct a panel discussion simulation with your students. This activity can be used with any current and controversial topic you determine. Divide your class into three roles and have each student complete their assigned template before, during, and after the activity. This resource consists of the following roles:
ROLE #1 - Expert panelist: Students assigned this role must do the following:
- Prepare two formal responses that cite reliable evidence. The first should address potential root causes of the problem. The second should address potential solutions to the issue.
- Demonstrate their knowledge of the topic by responding to a follow-up question from an audience member (they will not know this question ahead of time).
- Participate in a post-interview exercise with a journalist
- Identify something that was brought up in the simulation that needs to be fact-checked
- Complete a post-reflection WWW/EBI activity (What went well, Even better if)
ROLE #2 - Journalist: Students assigned this role must do the following:
- Think of a creative journalist name & newspaper they work for
- Take notes over each response from panelists in part 1 (discussing the problems) & part 2 (presenting solutions)
- Prepare a post-interview with one panelist or audience member that further informs your understanding of the event
- Follow along the newspaper template to construct a newspaper headline article covering the event (using your notes)
- Complete a post-reflection WWW/EBI activity (What went well, Even better if)
ROLE #3 - Audience Member: Students assigned this role must do the following:
- Decide what role in the audience they will play (Examples could include a concerned parent, high school student, local business leader, etc.)
- Determine which panelist had the best response to the essential question
- Create & deliver a follow-up question to one panelist
- Identify something that was brought up in the simulation that needs to be fact-checked
- Complete a post-reflection WWW/EBI activity (What went well, Even better if)
*Also including the Dream Team Panel Discussion Template to help students plan an actual panel discussion, or just use this resource as an exercise.
