This “homework assignment” is designed to get to know not only students, but parents and family as well. It also gives families a chance to get to know you too, which is so important as you set expectations in the classroom from the start of the year.

My middle schoolers like that the first homework assignment of the year is actually for their parents and families to complete. I am able to get them to practice writing homework down in their school planners from Day 1! I like to give families a whole week, including a weekend, to get this one page paper back. The start of the year can be overwhelming for families, especially if they have multiple children in school.
