Description

This MS PowerPoint presentation provides an easy-to-understand method with comprehensive steps to solve 1-step equations that involve only addition and subtraction. This Part 1 slide pack covers the solution of 1-step equations that utilize integers only. Separate Parts 2 and 3 presentation slidepacks cover the solutions that involve fractions and decimals, respectively.

I use this presentation in my 6th and 7th grade math classes and as a review in my 8th grade classes. The presentation is very detailed and fully animated to help keep the students engaged and focused. The presentation slidepack starts with a review of the equation solution process called "LBOOS". This process works on both simple 1-step and more complicated equation types encountered in later math classes.

A 5-step solution process is used to solve five (5) different example problem types. A blank template slide is also included at the end of the slidepack for students to use when solving other 1-step equation problems that may be assigned by the teacher.

I always print a hardcopy of the slidepack for my students to review and use as I go through the slide presentation. This way they can take notes on the slides and attempt to solve each of the problems themselves as the teacher goes thru the presentation. A total of 13 slides are included in this slidepack. The last slide includes 5 problems for the students to solve on their own. The answers to each of these 5 problems are also provided. The native MS PowerPoint ppt file is included to allow the teacher/end user to modify any of the slides if desired.

Understand solving an equation or inequality as a process of answering a question: which values from a specified set, if any, make the equation or inequality true? Use substitution to determine whether a given number in a specified set makes an equation or inequality true.
Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.
