Part Part Whole Word Problem Pack

This is a unit I made for my 2nd graders. There are several types of word problems meeting Common Core Standard 2.OA.A.1.

The Part Part Whole Method involves seeing numbers as being made of two or more parts. When students understand this model it has shown to increase understanding of work with place value, number concepts, and word problems.

Students first come to an understanding of what the "whole is". Then, they must observe whether something is being added (addition) to the whole or taken away (subtraction) from the whole.

My students really enjoyed reading the problems closely and discovering whether it would be an addition or subtraction problem!

In this product you will receive:

{{{28 Word Problem Task Cards!}}}

- 7 Task cards containing word problems with addition & subtraction mixed

- 7 Task cards containing addition word problems

{Example : There were 53 swimmers in the ocean. 34 more swimmers came into the ocean. How many swimmers were in the ocean altogether?}

-7 Task cards in which one of the "Parts" is missing.

{Example: Phillip made some paw prints in the snow in the morning. He made 42 more paw prints in the evening. How many paw prints did Phillip make in the morning?}

-7 Task cards containing subtraction word problems

{ Example: Atticus had 65 marbles. He gave 34 of them away. How many marbles does Atticus have now?}

- An A- F answer sheet with work space for students to complete the task cards.( The diagram which can be seen in my preview is included in each A-F workspace to support students with this Part Part Whole Model.)

- 4 addition activity pages with 2 word problems on each that can be used as Entrance/ Exit tickets or however you prefer. The diagram (which can be seen in my preview) is included beside each one of these word problems.

I found that in my classroom, the Part Part Whole diagram made it much easier for students to discern how to solve these tricky word problems! They really enjoyed working as partners to solve them as well.

Hooray Arrays!

Hooray, Arrays!

This is great way to practice Arrays! Within this activity, children will practice identifying rows & columns, repeated addition equations, and multiplication equations that match the arrays.

Children will practice drawing arrays with a certain number of rows and columns to prep for multiplication readiness.

I used these with my second graders and felt it worked wonders! With the chant: Rows go Side to Side and Columns go Up and Down reminder on the activity, children picked up on identifying rows and columns quite quickly.

{{ Sweet Fraction Scoot }}

Sweet Fraction Scoot

This sweet scoot will help your students practice identifying, drawing, and recording fractions! This product includes:

-13 "Cookie" task cards divided partitioned in halves, thirds, fourths, and sixths

- 6 task cards with specific instructions for students to draw their own cookie and shade in a specific faction of their cookie

- A workspace/recording sheet for students

-3 additional activity pages great for exit tickets or early finishers!

-Scoot Answer Key :)

These are all aligned with Common Core Standards!

Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
