Description

Help your students build early math and pre-reading skills with these hands-on pattern block sequence cards!

This set includes 50 cards, each showing a sequence of 4 pattern block shapes. Students recreate the sequence in a line, developing left-to-right directionality while strengthening visual discrimination and shape recognition.

The cards progress from simple patterns (three shapes the same, one different) to more complex sequences with four different shapes in varying combinations.

Perfect for math centers, morning tubs, early finishers, and hands-on learning.

Why Teachers Love This Resource

  • Builds both math AND pre-reading skills
  • Clear left-to-right structure supports directionality
  • Differentiated progression from simple to complex
  • Encourages independent problem-solving
  • Low prep — just print and add pattern blocks
  • Includes a visual “start here” 9cute happy face on the first shape) cue to support left-to-right directionality

Skills Covered

  • Recognizing and naming 2D shapes
  • Copying and extending patterns
  • Understanding sequences and order
  • Left-to-right tracking (pre-reading skill)
  • Visual discrimination and memory
  • Spatial awareness and fine motor skills

Extend the Learning

Students can deepen their understanding by creating their own 4-shape sequences, swapping one shape to make a new pattern, or covering the card and rebuilding it from memory. Partner activities can also be introduced, where one student builds a sequence and another copies it.

What’s Included

  • 50 pattern block sequence cards (4 shapes per card)
  • Space on each card for students to build the sequence
  • Teacher notes
  • Math center poster/label
  • 2 fun coloring pages - color the math kid and trace the shapes

Perfect For:

  • Pre-K, Kindergarten & early 1st grade
  • Math centers
  • Morning tubs
  • Early finishers
  • Small group instruction
  • Hands-on geometry and patterning
