Description
With this pattern block fractions bundle, your class will become familiar with fraction relationships between pattern blocks: they will investigate shapes to identify halves, thirds, and sixths of different pattern blocks. The second pattern block fraction resource builds on this fraction knowledge, having children partition pattern block composite shapes, identifying 'what fraction' of the composite shape a smaller designated shape is. This resource comes in both print and digital formats, with the print format suitable for fraction math centers and the digital format (made for Google slides) working well as the basis for fraction Number Talks.
The digital slides are made in Google Slides for display in class during your fraction lessons; fractions printables are included, so children can mark their own answers, as the answers are also marked on the displayed digital Google slide. These pattern block fraction lessons, with the visuals provided by the digital slides, will allow you to easily and effectively support children's thinking and reasoning about fractions, as you use the different activities on each slide to encourage and facilitate mathematical reasoning and discussions about fractions.
In these resources, you will receive:
- 24 digital slides (made for Google Slides) Fraction Lesson (finding fractions of single pattern blocks)
- 5 pages of 'Teaching Ideas/Suggestions
- 4 pages of printables/worksheets (printable version of the 24 slides)
- 24 digital slides (made for Google Slides) Fraction Lesson (finding fractions of pattern block composite shapes)
- 4 'Teaching Ideas/Suggestions' pages
- Printable version of the digital slides: 24 Task Cards (6 printable pages) + recording sheets + answer keys
In these lesson, children will use pattern blocks to:
- Find fractions (halves, thirds, sixths) of different shapes, noting that as the '1 whole' changes, the size of the fractional part also changes.
- Partition number lines into fractional parts
- Plot fractions on number lines
- Make equivalent fractions using shapes & identify the equivalent fractions made
- Find fractions of 'Challenge' composite shapes by partitioning a composite shape into different fractional parts
These slides provide an effective scaffold to support children's mathematical thinking and reasoning about fractions, as they investigate the properties of fractions through hands-on experience with pattern blocks. These 2 resources work well together, and make the most of your class pattern blocks for teaching fractions, fraction partitioning, and fraction relationships.
TPT will make a copy of the Google Slides activity for you and put it into your Google Drive. The PDF is also in the Google Drive folder, and you can simply download it to your computer (or print from Google Drive).
Answer Keys are included for quick marking, including teaching ideas for supporting children to solve the 'Challenge' slides.
As fractions rely heavily on multiplication and division knowledge and understanding, you may find the following resources helpful:
Bundle of Multiplication and Division Virtual Field Trips
Number Talk Resources (including dot cards to support Multiplication Number Talks)
Don't forget to leave feedback. When you leave feedback on purchases, you will receive TPT credit that you can put towards future purchases.
