Description

Combine geometry and number sense with this engaging set of pattern block picture cards that get students building, counting and matching quantities through hands-on play.

This interactive activity invites students to recreate designs using pattern blocks, then count and compare the number of shapes used. By matching cards with equal quantities, students make meaningful connections between visual models and numbers, while also exploring spatial reasoning.

With 108 different cards included, this resource is flexible, easy to prepare and perfect for math centers or small group work.

What’s Included in This Resource:

  • 108 pattern block picture cards (2 per page)
  • Designs using 2–10 shapes
  • Game play instructions
  • Optional follow-up worksheet
  • Cover page for easy organization

How Students Work with the Cards:

  • Choose a picture card and recreate the design using pattern blocks.
  • Count the number of shapes used.
  • Find another card with the same number of blocks.
  • Compare and discuss their findings.

Why This Activity Is a Great Fit for Math Centers:

  • Integrates geometry with number learning.
  • Encourages hands-on exploration and problem solving.
  • Supports flexible use across different number ranges.
  • Easy to prepare—just print and add pattern blocks.
  • Clean and simple design keeps students focused.

Learning Focus:

  • Counting and comparing quantities
  • Recognising equal groups
  • Exploring spatial reasoning (flip, rotate, arrange)
  • Connecting visual models to numbers
  • Introducing early number relationships (including doubles)

Ways You Might Use This Resource:

  • Add to a math center rotation.
  • Use in small group or guided math sessions.
  • Differentiate by limiting the number range.
  • Introduce dice or spinners for added challenge.
  • Use the worksheet for follow-up or assessment.

This versatile activity provides a simple and engaging way to connect geometry and number sense while helping students build confidence through hands-on learning.

I used this resource with the tangram blocks that I have from my math curriculum and the children really enjoy using them. They are very engaging and often are used by more than one student at a time.
