Patterns to Algebraic Expressions, Extend, Write, Model - Poster Project
Share

Description

Need a sticky, visual way for students to apply algebra? This activity features linear pattens that can be represented by expressions. Students of all abilities will find the project approachable and manageable. Whether they represent the patterns with drawings, words, or formal algebraic expressions, they will be challenged to think “algebraically” in order to analyze, extend, and represent the patterns as they move from one stage to the next.

Included in this resource:

  • Instructions and rubric to clearly communicate to students how to succeed.
  • Complete example poster to help self-directed students achieve mastery.
  • Facilitator notes with standards, suggestions, and complete answer keys.
  • Additional patterns for extension and differentiation.

This pattern poster project is great for introducing students to using expressions to represent linear patterns and arithmetic sequences at nearly any level and can be used at almost any point in an algebra study.

Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation “Subtract 𝘺 from 5” as 5 - 𝘺.
Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
