Description
Transform peer editing from a rushed classroom activity into a meaningful writing workshop experience with these structured Peer Editing Stations & Rotations.
If your students struggle to provide helpful feedback and often write comments like "Looks good" or "Great job," this resource gives them a clear framework for reviewing and revising writing.
Students move through four focused peer editing stations that break the revision process into manageable steps, helping them provide specific, constructive feedback while improving their own writing skills.
Perfect for argument essays, literary analysis essays, research papers, informative writing, and narrative writing assignments.
Why Teachers Love This Resource
- Eliminates vague peer feedback
- Provides a structured peer review process
- Helps students focus on one editing skill at a time
- Encourages meaningful revision and reflection
- Increases student accountability during peer editing
- Works with virtually any essay or writing assignment
- Includes editable teaching slides for direct instruction
How the Stations Work: Students rotate through four focused peer editing stations:
Station 1: Organization & Introduction
- Students review essay structure, introductions, thesis statements, topic sentences, and overall organization.
Station 2: Quotations, Citations, & Examples
- Students evaluate supporting evidence, quotations, examples, citations, and commentary.
Station 3: Grammar & Mechanics
- Students edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, tone, and style.
Station 4: Compliments & Suggestions
- Students provide meaningful feedback, constructive suggestions, and specific compliments that help writers improve their work.
Because students focus on one revision skill at a time, they provide stronger feedback and complete more effective revisions.
This peer editing resource includes the following the entire writing process by completing these peer-editing:
- An 18-slide, EDITABLE PowerPoint presentation for peer editing instruction
- Detailed teacher instructions and multiple activity ideas
- B&W and color station signs
- Peer editing recording sheet
- Reflection assignment
Your students will love working through the entire writing process by completing these peer-editing stations. Students will be engaging with one another, reading their peers' papers with focus, and will learn how to think like an editor in the process.
My favorite way to use this resource is to use it as a whole-class rotations activity. When I complete this peer editing activity in my classroom, every single student starts on station 1, and we work through it together. Then, I have my students switch papers and move on to the next station at the same time.
Prep is quick and easy... Just print out the recording sheet and reflection sheet (I like to do so double-sided) and project the presentation on your overhead. You can also print out the station signs for each table group.
The 6 included stations are:
- Organization and Introduction
- Quotes and Examples
- Grammar and Mechanics
- Compliments and Suggestions
For station 4, I've provided students with a variety of feedback sentence starters to help them provide meaningful feedback to their peers.
The peer editing PDF file (non-editable) includes student handouts, station/rotation signs, and more.
