🐧 Penguin Fractions Activity | 4th Grade Math Craft | GSE Aligned 🐧

Bring math and creativity together with this engaging Penguin Fractions Activity! Designed specifically for 4th grade, this hands-on craft allows students to practice comparing, ordering, adding, subtracting, and placing fractions on a number line while building their own adorable penguin.

Students must solve each fraction problem correctly before coloring, cutting, and assembling, making this activity both meaningful and motivating. (I typically check student work before giving the go-ahead to color and assemble so errors can be corrected prior to finishing.)

Because 4th Grade Georgia Standards of Excellence focus on fraction reasoning and operations with like denominators, all fraction tasks in this resource intentionally use common denominators. This allows students to concentrate on conceptual understanding, visual models, and accurate reasoning without introducing 5th-grade expectations such as finding common denominators.

A designated workspace is included for students to clearly show their thinking, making it easy to identify strategies, address misconceptions, and support meaningful math discussions. Perfect for ELs and struggling learners, the consistent routine of solve → check → color → assemble provides structure, repetition, and confidence-building success.

An answer key is included to make checking student work quick and efficient.

BONUS bulletin board letters allow you to transform completed penguins into a cheerful classroom or hallway display—reinforcing fraction learning in a fun, visual way.

📘 Standards Alignment (4th Grade – Georgia GSE)

This resource aligns to the following 4th Grade Georgia Standards of Excellence, but can easily be adapted to common core or other state specific standards.

  • MGSE4.NF.2 – Compare fractions and justify conclusions using benchmarks, visual models, and symbols
  • MGSE4.NF.3b – Add and subtract fractions with like denominators
  • MGSE4.NF.3c – Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators

Standards

Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
