Description
Materials:
· Water, cup, eyedropper, pennies, paper towel and lab sheet
Background: Students need to know how to safely use laboratory tools. Correct tools usage creates a safe environment, which will allow lab experiments to run carefully and correctly. In the Penny Drop Lab, there are two properties at work, cohesion and surface tension. “Cohesion is the attraction of like molecules to one another. Surface tension is a special term we use to describe the cohesion between water molecules.” Hydrogen bonds and surface tension give water some amazing properties.
I can:
· In pairs I can follow the steps of a controlled experiment and the scientific method to calculate how many drops of water a penny can hold.
Objectives:
- Students understand and practice lab safety procedures for using tools. `
- Students understand lab class guidelines and expectations for using tools.
- Students will become familiar with common laboratory equipment.
- Students will formulate a hypothesis based on our testable question and research provided.
- Students will collaborate in groups/pairs, follow the scientific method and conduct an experiment.
