Personal Narrative Color Coding Slideshow

Description

Personal Narratives are my favorite essays to teach, and I love reading my students stories! I was struggling with a way for students to make sure that they had every element and standard covered in their personal narrative essays and finally figured out a hands-on way to do this!

It has worked like a dream for my students and their final essays are so much better! I have included a link to a slideshow that will walk students through the color coding system and gives examples of each item they are color coding.

I have done this in one of two ways:

1. Have students use markers, colored pencils, or crayons to color code their rough drafts on notebook paper.

2. Students can digitally color code their narratives through google docs and change the font color.

You can choose to do this as whole group projecting the slideshow on the board, individually through assigning with Google Classroom or email, or have students switch papers/computers and color code someone else's essay.

I hope you find this resource useful! I would love your feedback if you this works well for your students!

It was a good mentor text. This allowed the students to see what the essay structure is like and what elements to include in their own writing. Thanks!

This is a fantastic way for students to visualize the parts of their writing. It makes writing conferences a breeze as I can quickly gauge where they are struggling.

I love this resource! I actually created and used something similar years ago for research papers and when I saw this for a narrative, I was excited. The kids were able to reference it as a way to ensure their work has all the required components before submitting and when peer reviews occurred, students could be heard saying, "I don't see your (fill in the color)". I recommend it for any grade level with some modification.
