Description

This personal writing activity has students write about and reflect on an experience with discrimination they experienced or witnessed. Students will write a narrative with a main idea. Includes narrative (essay) option and multimedia option. Prewriting worksheet walks students through picking a topic. Student instruction sheets and rubrics included for both projects. Great with Martin Luther King Jr. or as a stand-alone item.

Students may write about something they experienced or witnessed. The pre-writing process walks students through thinking about different types of discrimination and has them record instances of discrimination that they saw. Then they will narrow the choices and plan and outline the essay. They will also practice removing unimportant details from a sample paragraph then present the pre-writing for approval before beginning their paper or project.

After completing the Pre-Writing Worksheet, students will begin their essay draft or multimedia project. The Rubric can stand for the instruction sheet for the project as it includes everything they need to know for grading purposes.

Tire of essays? This project has a complete set of materials for use as a multimedia project instead!

The narrative requirements align pretty well with the requirements for a narrative essay, but the word Essay is left off the resource. This allows use with students new to or resistant to “essay” writing.
