Description

Students will use Claim, Evidence and Reasoning (CER) to explore various physical and chemical changes with hands-on, interactive lab stations.

All lab stations and student handout are completely editable!

Lab stations are quick and easy to set up. Each station will take students 6-8 minutes to complete. They include:

1. Creating a mini liquid density tower to observe how liquids of different densities layer.
2. Food coloring added to water.
3. Making a paper airplane.
4. Adding powdered drink mix to water.
5. Tearing marshmallows
6. Modeling clay
7. Adding vinegar and baking soda with a balloon to observe law of conservation of mass.
8. Adding an antacid tablet to water.

Content covered:
⭐ Physical properties (mass, weight, volume, density, malleability, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, solubility, magnetism, luster, viscosity)
⭐ Chemical Properties (reactivity, flammability)
⭐ Physical changes
⭐ Chemical Changes

I was able to assemble this lab using items from my school in under an hour one morning. I found this resource at 6:30 am and started teaching it (doing the lab) by 9:08 am that same day. I added a station #9 named "Making Pancakes." I made pancakes in front of them as they watched the bubbling of the CO2 being released. Each student got to eat a pancake (w/choc. chips optional). We talked about how this demonstrated a chemical reaction as they wrote their CER. LOVED IT. (2 day lab)

Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. Examples of reactions could include burning sugar or steel wool, fat reacting with sodium hydroxide, and mixing zinc with hydrogen chloride. Assessment is limited to analysis of the following properties: density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor.
